Part 1. What is Custom Recovery on Android?

Before we can describe exactly what Android custom recovery is we need to understand Android’s stock recovery. All Android devices come with a recovery environment that every user can easily access. This is often referred as the stock recovery and android users can access it by pressing specific buttons on their device or by issuing adb commands.

Once you can access this stock recovery, it provides a number of options to recover, reset and even reboot the systems. It can also be used to flash OTA update files. It is however limited in that it cannot allows you to flash third-party ROMs on your device.

This is where Android Custom recovery comes in. custom recovery refers to a third-party recovery environment. Flashing this recovery on your device will replace the default or stock recovery that comes with an Android device with a custom environment that is usually highly customizable.

It does the same thing as the stock recovery but will have additional features such as the ability to create and restore backups. But of all its customizable features, its most functional aspect is the fact that it allows the user to install custom ROMs that can further customize the device.

Popular Custom Recoveries

One of the most popular ones is ClockworkMod recovery. It can be used to create and restore backups of the entire system, commonly known as NANDroid backups. This custom recovery comes with a ROM manager that allows the user to easily install ROMs via ClockworkMod recovery as well as manage the backups created.

Another popular Custom recovery for Android is Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). It is a touch ba_x_sed environment that is slightly different from other recovery environments. This is because it doesn’t need to be controlled using any buttons on the device but it instead utilizes a touch ba_x_sed interface. It even supports themes and offers installation and backup features.

Step 2: Once you launch ROM Manager on your device, you should see the option “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery” tap on this option.

Step 3: Wait for the system to reboot and the latest version of ClockworkMod to be installed on your device. If you are prompted to, select to reboot your device.

Step 4: You should have successfully installed ClockworkMod on your device after this. Verify that the installation has been successful by launching ROM Manager. Your first option should be ClockworkMod installed as well as a number of other updates that are available. If there is a newer version simply tap on it and follow the instructions to update it.

Install TWRP Recovery with GooManager

Step 1: The first step is to install GooManager on your device. GooManager is an application that allows you to install several Android ROMs that are hosted on the website as well as the latest TWRP Touch recovery.

Step 2: Launch the application on your device

Step 3: Press Manu within the app and select “Install OpenRecoverysc_x_ript” option. Confirm any prompts that you will get and provide root access if the application requests it.

Install custom recovery using Manual methods

You can also manually install both ClockworkMod and TWRP on your device. In order to use the method below to do this, you need the latest recovery image for your device which you can get from the ClockworkMod recovery download page or the TWRP download page.

Using Flashboot

To use this method, you also need to download and install the latest version of Fastboot on your computer as well as have ADB. Once you have both of these, follow these simple steps to manually install custom recovery.

Step 1: Copy the recovery image and save it to a convenient location on your PC. Please note that the recovery image should have an .img extension. If it is in a zip file, you will need to extract the .img file from it.

Step 2: Connect your device to the PC while it is powered on and booted in Android normally and wait till you see “Flashboot USB” on the screen.

Step 3: Launch command prompt and type the following; “flashboot flash recovery c: ecovery.img” Note that c: ecovery.img represents the path where you saved the recovery image. It may be different for you.

Step 4: Wait for the process to finish and reboot the device. You should have successfully installed custom recovery on your device.

Ideally, you should use the two methods described above to install custom recovery on your device. Make use of the manual method only when the apps fail for one reason or another. This is because using apps to install custom recovery is not only easier but also quite effective. Whatever method you use, we hope that you can now enjoy the additional features that custom recovery environments will bring to your device.
