Deleting Text Messages in iOS 7, iOS 8 and iOS 9

You want to delete a single text message but can't figure out how to. Or you want to delete a number of text messages to create space on your iPhone but you just don't know how. Believe it or not this is a problem that many people face. The reality is that the procedure for deleting text messages varies depending on the iOS version you are currently using.

In this article we are going to describe how to delete text messages for iOS 7, iOS 8 and iOS 9 users to make it easy for you to get rid of those unwanted text. Let's begin with iOS 7.

Part 1: How to Delete Text Messages in iOS 7

Before iOS 7 launched it used to be very easy to delete your text messages but iOS 7 has eliminated the "Edit" button that used to be in the top right corner. Instead there is now a contact button which is useful in its own right but will not help you delete unwanted texts.

Swiping to the left enables you to delete entire conversations. But how do you delete messages within a conversation? Here's how.

Step 1: Open the messaging app on your device.

Step 2: Select the Conversation you would like to delete.

Step 2: Hold your finger on any of the messages in the conversation until the "More" option is presented.

Step 4: Select More and then select the messages you would like to delete and then tap on the trashcan icon at the bottom left of the screen, you can also delete the entire conversation by tapping on "Delete All"

Part 2: How to Delete Text Messages in iOS 8

iOS 8 came with a lot of improvements including enhances messaging. But how do you delete messages if you are using iOS 8? Here's how.

To delete a single message from a conversation:

Step 1: Launch the Messages App and select Contact

Step 2: Tap and hold on the individual message you want to delete. A popup will appear. Select "More" from the options.

Step 3:  selecting "More" will automatically select that particular message.

Step 4: To delete the message click on the trash icon on the bottom right of your screen.

Step 5: You will be required to confirm that you want to delete message. Tap on "Delete Message" to confirm the choice.

You can also delete all the messages at once. To do this launch the Messages App, Tap on Edit, select the contact thread and then tap on delete.

It is important to note that if you tap and hold on numbers in the messages, the trash button may not appear. Therefore, tap on words and not numbers.

Part 3: Deleting Text Messages in iOS 9

iOS 9 users can also easily delete individual or multiple messages from a single contact in the messages app. To delete an individual message:

Step 1: Open the Messaging app on your device and choose a contact. Tap and hold or double tap on the message you wish to delete. Choose "More" from the options provided.

Step 2: Select the messages you wish to delete and then tap on the trash icon to delete them. You can also tap "Delete all" on the top left corner of the screen.

To delete all the messages from a contact, simply hold the contact and then swipe to the left and then tap "Delete." If you however want to delete all messages from more than one contact, here's what you should do.

Step 1: Tap on "Edit" at the top left of the screen.

Step 2: Select the contacts and tap "Delete" to remove text messages from the selected contact.
