How to Fix iPhone Speaker Crackling Sound
Crackling or distorted audio can occur from physical damage (water/drops) or software bitrate errors.
Comparison of Causes:
| Software Cause | Hardware Cause |
|---|---|
| Crackles only in specific apps | Crackles on all sounds (ringtones, calls, music) |
| Fixed by restarting or updating | Persistent regardless of volume level |
Quick Fixes:
1. Rule out software/volume routing
- Test with different apps (Music/YouTube/Voice Memos).
- Toggle Bluetooth OFF (audio may be routed elsewhere).
- Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth to check distortion. See Apple Support.
2. Clean the speaker/receiver (most common fix)
- Remove the case/screen protector that may block grilles.
- Use a small, soft‑bristled brush to gently clean the speaker/receiver opening (brush must be clean and dry).
3. Restart (then force restart if needed)
- Restart iPhone once; if crackling persists, do a force restart to clear audio glitches.
4. Update iOS
- Settings > General > Software Update (audio bugs can be fixed via updates).
🤔 Solution:
Before visiting a repair shop, perform a System Repair using Dr.Fone - System Repair (iOS) to ensure the audio drivers aren't corrupted.
