How to Fix Xiaomi Phone Saying 'Phone Memory Full' When It Has Space
Getting a "Phone Memory Full" or "Insufficient Storage" error on your Xiaomi when storage shows available space is a known HyperOS bug. Here's how to resolve it.
Why This Happens
This error usually occurs because:
1. Cache and temp files consuming hidden space not shown in the storage bar
2. System or app log files that have grown very large
3. "Other" storage category bloated with miscellaneous data
4. App data in private directories not visible in File Manager
5. Storage metadata mismatch — HyperOS miscalculates available space
Fix 1: Run the Built-in Cleaner
Open Security (Phone Manager) → tap "Clean" → scan and clean. This specifically targets hidden cache and residual files that don't show in the storage breakdown.
Fix 2: Check "Other" Storage Category
Settings → Storage → tap "Other" in the storage breakdown. This category often hides large miscellaneous files. Drill down and delete unnecessary items.
Fix 3: Clear App Cache in Bulk
Settings → Additional Settings → Storage → tap "Cached Data" → OK to clear all app caches at once. This can free several GB quickly.
Fix 4: Restart the Phone
A restart forces HyperOS to re-index storage. After restarting, check Settings → Storage again — the "available" number may update correctly.
Fix 5: Check for Large Log Files
Settings → Storage → "Other Files" → look for files in /log, /cache, or .temp directories. Log files from crashed apps can grow to several GB.
Fix 6: Move Photos to Cloud
If all else fails, temporarily move photos to Google Photos or Mi Cloud, delete originals from the phone, and clear the Gallery recycle bin.
Fix 7: Factory Reset
If the storage error persists after all steps, a factory reset completely clears the file system and resolves any storage metadata corruption.
