How to Enable TalkBack Screen Reader on Xiaomi for Visually Impaired Users

TalkBack is Android's built-in screen reader that narrates everything on screen — buttons, text, images — helping visually impaired users navigate the phone independently.

Enable TalkBack

Quick method:
- Hold both Volume Up + Volume Down for 3 seconds → TalkBack toggle prompt appears.
- Confirm to enable.

Settings method:
1. Settings → Additional Settings → Accessibility → Vision → TalkBack.
2. Toggle TalkBack on.
3. Confirm the permission dialog.

Basic TalkBack Gestures

Once TalkBack is active, standard touch gestures change:

Gesture Action
Single tapSelect / read item aloud
Double tapActivate selected item
Swipe rightMove to next item
Swipe leftMove to previous item
Swipe up then downScroll down on page
Two-finger tapPause / resume speech
Two-finger swipe upGo to top of page
Three-finger tapTalkBack menu

Configure TalkBack Settings
  1. After enabling, go to Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack → Settings.
  2. Adjust:
    • Speech rate: Slower for beginners (50–70%).
    • Pitch: Lower pitch is easier to understand for some users.
    • Verbosity: Control how much detail is read (element type, state, hints).
    • Vibration feedback: Enable for tactile confirmation.

TalkBack Tutorial

On first enable, TalkBack offers a built-in tutorial:
- Accept the tutorial prompt → follow guided exercises.
- The tutorial covers all basic gestures and takes about 10 minutes.
- Re-access via TalkBack Settings → Launch TalkBack tutorial.

Disable TalkBack

If TalkBack makes the phone difficult to use for a caregiver:
1. Hold Volume Up + Volume Down for 3 seconds to toggle off.
2. Or: Settings → Accessibility → TalkBack → double-tap to toggle off (TalkBack is active, so use TalkBack gestures).

Pro Tips
  • Select to Speak (a less disruptive alternative to TalkBack): Tap the accessibility button → tap any text → it reads only what you tap, without changing touch behavior across the whole phone.
  • For Xiaomi phones, ensure Google Text-to-Speech is installed and set as the TTS engine for the best TalkBack voice quality.
