How to Fix Slow 4G LTE Speed on Xiaomi / Redmi Phones

How to Fix Slow 4G LTE Speed on Xiaomi / Redmi Phones

If your Xiaomi phone feels like it's running on 3G even with 4 bars of signal, these fixes usually resolve it.

Fix 1 – Force 4G Only Mode
  1. Settings → SIM cards & mobile networks → SIM → Preferred network type.
  2. Select LTE/4G (not Auto).
  3. This prevents the phone from dropping to slower 2G/3G in mixed-signal areas.

Fix 2 – Reset APN Settings

A corrupted APN (Access Point Name) is a common cause of slow data:
1. Settings → SIM & mobile networks → SIM → Access Point Names.
2. Tap the menu icon (⋮) → Reset to default.
3. Restart and test speed at fast.com.

Fix 3 – Toggle Airplane Mode
  1. Swipe down → enable Airplane Mode for 10 seconds.
  2. Disable Airplane Mode.
  3. The phone re-registers to the nearest cell tower, often improving speed.

Fix 4 – Move SIM to Slot 1

On many Xiaomi dual-SIM phones, SIM slot 1 has a stronger radio for data. If your data SIM is in slot 2, move it.

Settings → SIM & mobile networks → SIM management to set default data SIM.

Fix 5 – Check Data Limit / Throttling
  1. Settings → SIM & mobile networks → Data usage.
  2. Check if a data warning or limit has been hit — carriers throttle speed after hitting your plan limit.

Fix 6 – Disable Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling can sometimes interfere with LTE handoff:
1. Settings → SIM & mobile networks → SIM → Wi-Fi Calling.
2. Toggle it off and test 4G speed again.

Fix 7 – Update Carrier Settings
  1. Settings → About Phone → All Specs → Operator → Check for update.
  2. Install any available carrier settings update.

Fix 8 – Network Settings Reset
  1. Settings → Additional Settings → Backup & Reset → Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth settings.
  2. Confirm reset — this clears saved Wi-Fi passwords too, so note them first.

When to Contact Your Carrier

If all fixes fail and speed tests show under 5 Mbps consistently, the issue may be:

  • Network congestion in your area
  • SIM card degradation (request a free SIM swap from your carrier)
  • Account-level throttling on your plan
