How to Fix Xiaomi Phone Wi-Fi Not Turning On or Greyed Out

A greyed-out or unresponsive Wi-Fi toggle usually points to a software glitch, a conflicting setting, or (rarely) a hardware issue.

Fix 1 – Restart the Phone

The simplest fix — a soft restart clears most temporary radio glitches:
- Press and hold PowerRestart.

Fix 2 – Toggle Airplane Mode
  1. Swipe down notification panel → enable Airplane Mode for 30 seconds.
  2. Disable Airplane Mode.
  3. Try toggling Wi-Fi again.

Fix 3 – Check for Conflicting VPN / Firewall Apps

Some VPN or security apps can block the Wi-Fi radio:
1. Disable any active VPN.
2. Force stop any firewall or privacy app.
3. Try enabling Wi-Fi.

Fix 4 – Clear Wi-Fi Settings via Network Reset
  1. Settings → Additional Settings → Backup & Reset → Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth Settings.
  2. Confirm. Note: this erases saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Fix 5 – Boot into Safe Mode

Safe mode disables third-party apps:
1. Hold Power → Long-press "Restart" → Reboot to Safe Mode.
2. Try enabling Wi-Fi in safe mode.
3. If it works → a third-party app is causing the issue. Uninstall recently installed apps.

Fix 6 – Wipe Cache Partition (if available)
  1. Power off → hold Power + Volume Up to enter Recovery Mode.
  2. Select Wipe cache partition.
  3. Restart and test Wi-Fi.

Fix 7 – Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If all else fails:
1. Back up your data first.
2. Settings → Additional Settings → Backup & Reset → Erase All Data.
3. If Wi-Fi still doesn't work after a fresh reset, it is a hardware fault — visit a Xiaomi service center.

Hardware vs Software Diagnosis
Sign Likely Cause
Wi-Fi works in Safe Mode Third-party app conflict
Wi-Fi works after reset Software/settings corruption
Wi-Fi grey even after full reset Hardware issue (Wi-Fi chip)

Pro Tips
  • On HyperOS, check Battery & Performance → Power Saving — some aggressive battery profiles disable Wi-Fi scanning.
  • If the phone was dropped or exposed to moisture before the issue appeared, hardware damage is likely.
