How to Improve Wi-Fi Signal Strength and Speed on Xiaomi Phones
How to Improve Wi-Fi Signal Strength and Speed on Xiaomi Phones
Before blaming the router, check these Xiaomi-specific settings — they can dramatically improve Wi-Fi performance.
Tip 1 – Switch to 5GHz Band
If your router supports dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz):
1. In Wi-Fi settings, connect to your router's 5GHz network (usually named with "5G" or "_5GHz").
2. 5GHz is faster but shorter range; use it when you're close to the router.
Tip 2 – Forget and Reconnect to Wi-Fi
- Settings → Wi-Fi → Long-press your network → Forget network.
- Reconnect and re-enter password.
- This clears any corrupted connection data.
Tip 3 – Disable Wi-Fi Assistant (Auto Switch to Mobile Data)
Xiaomi's Wi-Fi Assistant switches to mobile data when Wi-Fi is "slow" — sometimes incorrectly:
1. Settings → Wi-Fi → Wi-Fi assistant (or Advanced Wi-Fi settings).
2. Disable Smart network switch or Adaptive Wi-Fi.
Tip 4 – Enable Wi-Fi 6 / 6E If Supported
- Settings → Wi-Fi → Advanced settings.
- Enable Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) if listed.
- This requires a Wi-Fi 6 router — Xiaomi 13/14/15 series and POCO F series support it.
Tip 5 – Disable Bluetooth (Reduces 2.4GHz Interference)
Bluetooth and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi share the same frequency. When both are active on 2.4GHz, interference reduces speed. Disable Bluetooth when you need maximum Wi-Fi speed.
Tip 6 – Change DNS to a Faster Server
- Settings → Wi-Fi → Long-press connected network → Modify network → Advanced options.
- Change IP settings to Static.
- Set DNS 1 to
8.8.8.8(Google) or1.1.1.1(Cloudflare).
Tip 7 – Check for Background Data Usage
Apps using Wi-Fi in the background reduce available bandwidth:
- Settings → Apps → Manage apps → select app → Data usage → disable Background data for heavy apps.
Tip 8 – Update Router Firmware
A slow phone may actually be a slow router issue. Log into your router admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1) and update firmware.
Tip 9 – Use a Wi-Fi Analyzer App
Install Wi-Fi Analyzer (Google Play) to:
- Find the least congested Wi-Fi channel.
- Change your router's channel from 1/6/11 to a less-used one.
Pro Tips
- Place your phone in the same room as the router during high-demand tasks (video calls, gaming).
- If possible, use Wi-Fi Direct or an Ethernet adapter (USB-C to RJ45) for truly interference-free connections.
