How to Recover a Forgotten Mi Account Password on Xiaomi Phone

Forgetting your Mi Account password is serious on Xiaomi — account lock after factory reset can brick your phone. Here's how to recover it.

Method 1 – Reset via Phone Number
  1. On the Mi Account sign-in screen, tap Forgot password.
  2. Select Phone number.
  3. Enter the registered phone number → request OTP.
  4. Enter the 6-digit OTP received via SMS.
  5. Set a new password.

Method 2 – Reset via Email
  1. Tap Forgot password → Email.
  2. Enter your registered email address.
  3. Click the reset link in the email (check spam folder).
  4. Set a new password.

Method 3 – Recover via Xiaomi ID Verification

If you no longer have access to the registered email or phone:
1. Go to account.xiaomi.comForgot password → Can't verify identity.
2. Fill in the identity verification form: registered email, phone number (even if changed), region, and account creation date.
3. Submit — Xiaomi's support team reviews manually (takes 3–7 business days).

Method 4 – On-Device Account Recovery (HyperOS)

If still logged in to the device:
1. Settings → Mi Account → Security → Change password.
2. Verify with the current password or a one-time SMS code.

Activation Lock After Factory Reset

If you factory-reset without removing the Mi Account and now the phone demands the password:
1. Enter the correct Mi Account credentials on the lock screen.
2. If you don't know them, use the account recovery website (Method 3 above).
3. After recovery, sign in to unlock the device.

⚠️ There is no bypass for Mi Account activation lock — this is a security feature designed to prevent theft. Xiaomi support is the only official recourse.

Prevention Checklist
  • [ ] Save Mi Account credentials in a password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password).
  • [ ] Add both email and phone number as recovery options.
  • [ ] Enable Two-Factor Authentication for extra security.
  • [ ] Write credentials in a secure physical location as a backup.

Pro Tips
  • The activation lock screen appears after factory reset only if Mi Account was not removed before reset.
  • Recovery via Xiaomi support requires proof of identity — have your purchase receipt ready.
  • If the account uses a phone number you no longer own, contact your carrier first to recover the old number, then use SMS reset.
