How to Remove Mi Account from Xiaomi Phone Before Selling
Mi Account (also known as Xiaomi Account on HyperOS) is tied to Find My Device and factory-reset protection. Removing it before selling prevents the next owner from being locked out.
Method 1 – Remove via Settings (Phone in Your Hands)
On MIUI:
1. Open Settings → Mi Account.
2. Scroll to the bottom → tap Sign Out.
3. Enter your Mi Account password to confirm.
On HyperOS (2024–2025 phones):
1. Open Settings → tap your account name / avatar at the top.
2. Scroll down → tap Sign Out.
3. Confirm with your account password or device PIN.
After sign-out, Find My Device and Mi Cloud sync are disabled for this phone.
Method 2 – Remove Remotely via Mi Cloud Website
If you no longer have the phone:
1. Go to i.mi.com on a browser.
2. Sign in with your Mi Account.
3. Go to Find Device → select the device → tap More → Unbind Device.
4. Confirm removal.
What Happens If You Don't Remove It?
| Situation | Result |
|---|---|
| Sold phone with Mi Account | Buyer cannot activate without your password |
| Factory reset without removal | Activation lock screen appears on reboot |
| Lost/stolen phone | Risk: thief cannot use it, but you may need remote removal |
Troubleshooting: Forgot Mi Account Password
- On the account lock screen, tap Forgot Password.
- Verify via registered email or phone number.
- If you cannot recover via email/phone, contact Xiaomi Support with proof of purchase.
Pro Tips
- Remove Mi Account before factory reset — after resetting without removing, you will be prompted for the account password on the next boot.
- If you use Find My Device actively, disabling it first (Settings → Mi Account → Find My Device → Off) is not required but makes the process cleaner.
- HyperOS 2 links accounts more tightly — always double-check Settings → Your Name shows "Not logged in" after removal.
