How to Use Xiaomi Phone as Wi-Fi Hotspot and Manage Connected Devices

Xiaomi's hotspot feature lets you share mobile data with laptops, tablets, and other phones.

Enable Personal Hotspot

On HyperOS:
1. Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot.
2. Toggle Personal hotspot on.
3. Tap Hotspot name to set your SSID.
4. Tap Password to set a secure password (min. 8 characters).

Quick toggle:
Swipe down from the top → tap the Hotspot icon in Quick Settings.

Configure Hotspot Settings
Setting Recommendation
Hotspot name Avoid using your phone model (privacy)
Password Use 10+ characters with numbers/symbols
Security type WPA2 / WPA3 (avoid Open)
Frequency band 5GHz for speed (if supported); 2.4GHz for range
Maximum devices Set to 3–5 to prevent network congestion

Manage Connected Devices
  1. Go to Settings → Connection & sharing → Personal hotspot.
  2. Tap Connected devices to see all currently connected devices.
  3. Tap any device to block or disconnect it.

Set a Data Limit for Hotspot
  1. In Hotspot settings, tap Data limit.
  2. Set a usage cap (e.g., 1 GB, 3 GB).
  3. The hotspot will automatically shut off when the limit is reached.

USB Tethering (Alternative to Wi-Fi Hotspot)

If you only need to share internet with one PC:
1. Connect phone to PC via USB cable.
2. Settings → Connection & sharing → USB tethering → toggle on.
3. The PC will recognize a new network adapter.

Pro Tips
  • 5GHz hotspot drains battery faster but offers lower latency — good for gaming laptops.
  • 2.4GHz has better range through walls.
  • On HyperOS, enable Auto-off when idle to prevent the hotspot from staying on when no device is connected.
  • Hotspot activity is counted against your mobile data plan — monitor usage to avoid overage charges.
