How to Move Apps to SD Card on Xiaomi / Redmi Phones
If your Xiaomi or Redmi phone supports a microSD card, you can use it to expand storage. Here's how to move apps and data to your SD card.
Check SD Card Support
Not all Xiaomi models support microSD cards. Models that do include most Redmi and Redmi Note series. POCO F-series and Xiaomi flagships often do not have SD card slots. Check your model specifications first.
Method 1: Move Individual Apps via Settings
- Go to Settings > Apps > Manage Apps
- Select the app you want to move
- Tap "Storage"
- Tap "Change" or "Move to SD Card" (appears only if supported)
Limitation: Not all apps can be moved — system apps and apps that require fast storage (games, banking apps) may not show this option.
Method 2: Use Adoptable Storage (Format SD as Internal)
⚠️ Warning: This erases all data on the SD card and is not easily reversible.
- Insert the SD card
- Go to Settings > Storage
- Tap the SD card → "Format as Internal Storage"
- HyperOS will merge SD card storage with internal storage
- After formatting, apps can be freely moved to the SD partition
Pros of Adoptable Storage:
- SD card becomes part of unified internal storage
- All apps can potentially use it
Cons:
- SD card is locked to this phone (encrypted)
- Slower app performance vs UFS internal storage
- If SD card fails, data is lost
Recommended SD Card Specs
For best performance, use a Class 10 / UHS-I (U3) or A2-rated microSD card. Slow SD cards cause apps to load noticeably slower.
Pro Tip: Keep your OS and frequently used apps on internal storage. Move media files (photos, music, downloads) to SD card for the best balance of performance and space.
