How to Save Your Xiaomi / Redmi Phone After Water Damage
Every second counts when a phone gets wet. Here is the correct emergency procedure to maximize the chances of saving your Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone.
Immediate Actions (Do These Now)
- Power off the phone immediately — do not press any buttons or try to check if it's working
- Remove from water and shake out excess water gently
- Remove the SIM card tray to allow moisture to escape from the SIM slot
- Do NOT charge it — charging a wet phone can cause short circuits and permanent damage
- Do NOT use a hair dryer on high heat — heat can warp internal components
Drying Methods
Recommended: Silica Gel Packets
Place the phone in an airtight bag or container filled with silica gel packets for 24–48 hours. Silica gel is highly effective at absorbing moisture.
Alternatives:
- Seal in a bag of uncooked rice (less effective than silica gel, but widely available)
- Place in front of a fan in a warm room with good airflow
- Use a dedicated electronics drying bag if available
Know Your Xiaomi's IP Rating
| Model Series | IP Rating | Water Resistance |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 15 / 15 Pro | IP68 | 1.5 m for 30 min |
| Xiaomi 14 / 14 Ultra | IP68 | 1.5 m for 30 min |
| Redmi Note 13 Pro+ | IP68 | 1.5 m for 30 min |
| POCO F6 Pro | IP64 | Splash resistant only |
| Redmi 13C | No IP rating | Not water resistant |
IP68 models have a good chance of surviving brief submersion. Non-rated models are much more vulnerable.
After Drying (24–48 Hours Later)
- Plug in the charger (without powering on) — if it charges, power it on slowly
- Test all functions: speaker, microphone, touchscreen, cameras
- Visit a Xiaomi service center if any function is impaired
Important: Water damage typically voids the standard warranty. However, Xiaomi's extended care plans sometimes cover accidental liquid damage — check your coverage.
