How to Scan for and Remove Viruses from Xiaomi / Redmi Phone
While Android viruses are less common than on PCs, Xiaomi phones — especially those with APKs installed from outside the Play Store — can be at risk. Here's how to scan and clean your device.
Step 1: Use Xiaomi's Built-in Virus Scanner
- Open the Security (Phone Manager) app
- Tap "Virus Scan"
- Tap "Scan Now"
- The scan checks installed apps against Xiaomi's malware database (powered by Avast)
- If threats are found, tap "Remove" to delete them
Run this scan monthly as routine maintenance.
Step 2: Run Google Play Protect
Play Protect scans all installed apps continuously:
- Open Google Play Store
- Tap your profile icon (top-right) → "Play Protect"
- Tap "Scan" for an immediate scan
- Review any flagged apps and uninstall them
Step 3: Identify Suspicious App Behavior
Signs your Xiaomi may be infected:
- Unexpected ads appearing on the home screen or outside of apps
- Unknown apps installed that you didn't download
- Battery draining much faster than usual
- Phone overheating without heavy use
- Data usage spiking unexpectedly
- Phone acting sluggish after installing an APK
Step 4: Uninstall Suspicious Apps
Settings → Apps → Manage Apps → look for apps you don't recognize or didn't install. Uninstall them. If an app can't be uninstalled, it may have Device Administrator rights — remove those first at Settings → Additional Settings → Privacy → Device Administrators.
Step 5: Factory Reset (Last Resort)
If malware persists despite scanning and uninstalling suspect apps, a factory reset is the most reliable fix. Back up your important data first with Dr.Fone – Phone Backup, then reset via Settings → Additional Settings → Backup & Reset.
