How to Set Up Your New Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO Phone for the First Time
Congratulations on your new Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone! Follow this guide to get it configured perfectly from the start.
Step 1: Initial Setup Wizard
When you first power on the phone, HyperOS walks you through:
- Language and Region — choose your country for correct APN settings
- Wi-Fi connection — connect to your home Wi-Fi
- Google Account — sign in to restore apps, contacts, and backups
- Mi Account — create or sign into your Xiaomi account for Mi Cloud, Find My Device, and warranty
Step 2: Transfer Data from Your Old Phone
Use Mi Mover (pre-installed) to transfer data wirelessly from your old phone:
- Open Mi Mover on both phones
- Select "Send" on old phone, "Receive" on new phone
- Scan the QR code to connect
- Choose what to transfer (contacts, photos, apps, messages)
Alternatively, restore from a Google Backup or Mi Cloud Backup.
Step 3: Update HyperOS Immediately
Go to Settings > About Phone > System Update. Install all available updates before using the phone — they often include critical security patches and bug fixes.
Step 4: Disable Bloatware
Go to Settings > Apps > Manage Apps. Disable apps you don't use (Mi Video, Mi Music, Mi Browser, etc.). You can also uninstall some via long-press on the home screen.
Step 5: Configure Essential Settings
| Setting | Where to Find | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Screen timeout | Settings > Display > Sleep | 1 minute |
| Fingerprint | Settings > Biometrics & Password | Set up 2 fingers |
| Battery Protection | Settings > Battery | Enable |
| Notification permissions | Settings > Notifications | Review per app |
| Find My Device | Settings > Mi Account > Find My Device | Enable |
Step 6: Install Your Essential Apps
Open the Play Store and install your must-have apps. Sign into each service to restore your data.
