How to Use Xiaomi's Optimized Charging (Battery Protection) Feature
Charging your Xiaomi phone to 100% every night sounds good, but it actually degrades the battery faster. HyperOS includes two smart charging features to protect long-term battery health.
Feature 1: Battery Protection (80% Limit)
Battery Protection stops charging at 80% and maintains it there. This is ideal if your phone stays plugged in at a desk all day.
How to enable:
Settings → Battery → Battery Protection → Toggle ON
When enabled, a small shield icon appears in the status bar while charging, and charging stops at 80%.
Feature 2: Optimized Charging (Scheduled)
HyperOS learns when you typically wake up (based on usage patterns or manual schedule) and charges the phone to 80% quickly, then pauses, completing the final 20% just before you wake up. This minimizes the time at 100% — the most harmful state for lithium batteries.
How to enable:
Settings → Battery → Optimized Charging → Toggle ON → Set your typical wake-up time.
Which Mode Should You Use?
| Scenario | Recommended Mode |
|---|---|
| Phone always plugged in at desk | Battery Protection (80% limit) |
| Phone charged overnight | Optimized Charging |
| Travelling / need full charge | Disable both temporarily |
| Daily mixed use | Optimized Charging |
Science Behind It
Lithium-ion batteries age fastest when kept at high states of charge (above 80%) or discharged below 20%. The 20–80% range minimizes electrochemical stress. Over 500 charge cycles, a battery kept in this range retains ~90% capacity vs ~75% for 0–100% cycling.
Disable When Needed
Toggle either feature OFF before a long trip or day where you need maximum battery capacity.
