What Is HyperOS and How Is It Different from MIUI?
In late 2023, Xiaomi officially replaced MIUI with HyperOS across its phone, tablet, and smart home ecosystem. Here's what changed — and what stayed the same.
What Is HyperOS?
HyperOS is Xiaomi's new unified operating system designed to run across:
- Smartphones (Xiaomi, Redmi, POCO)
- Tablets (Xiaomi Pad series)
- Smart TVs (Xiaomi TV)
- Smart home devices (Xiaomi IoT ecosystem)
- Wearables (Mi Band, Mi Watch)
It is built on Android + Xiaomi's own Vela kernel layer, designed for cross-device integration under one OS umbrella.
HyperOS vs. MIUI: Key Differences
| Feature | MIUI 14 | HyperOS 1 / 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Base Android version | Android 13/14 | Android 14/15 |
| Cross-device integration | Limited | Full HyperConnect ecosystem |
| Bloatware | More pre-installed apps | Reduced on Global ROM |
| UI design | MIUI visual style | Refreshed, more fluid animations |
| AI features | Basic | AI photo editing, Circle to Search, AI writing |
| RAM management | Good | Improved on HyperOS 2 |
| Update cycle | MIUI versioning | HyperOS versioning (separate) |
| Smart home control | Mi Home integration | Deeper built-in HyperConnect |
What Stayed the Same
- Core Android functionality (Google Play, notifications, etc.) is unchanged.
- App compatibility: all Android apps work on HyperOS exactly as on MIUI.
- Most MIUI settings paths exist in the same locations (some renamed).
- Security updates follow Google's schedule regardless of MIUI/HyperOS branding.
HyperOS 1 vs HyperOS 2
HyperOS 1 (2023–2024): First release — more of a visual/naming rebrand with improved cross-device features.
HyperOS 2 (2024–2025): Significant upgrade:
- AI features: Circle to Search, AI Photo Edit, AI Writing Assistant.
- Better multitasking and split-screen.
- Improved privacy dashboard.
- App Cloner (Dual Apps) improvements.
Will Your Phone Get HyperOS?
Xiaomi announced HyperOS updates for:
- Xiaomi 10 series and newer (flagships).
- Redmi Note 10 series and newer (mid-range).
- POCO F3 and newer.
Budget Redmi phones (C-series, A-series) may remain on MIUI or receive a lightweight HyperOS variant.
Pro Tips
- If your phone still shows MIUI 14, it may be on a delayed HyperOS rollout schedule — check for updates regularly.
- HyperOS does not remove or replace the Google layer — all Google services work normally on Global ROM.
- The biggest user-facing benefit of HyperOS is the cross-device PC link and smart home integration — if you only use the phone independently, differences are subtle.
