What to Do Immediately When Your Xiaomi / Redmi Phone Gets Wet
Quick action in the first 60 seconds can mean the difference between a working phone and a write-off.
Step 1 – Get It Out of Water Immediately
Every second counts. Remove the phone from water as fast as possible.
Step 2 – Power Off RIGHT NOW
If the screen is still on:
1. Hold Power → Power off immediately.
2. Do NOT wait, do NOT try to check if it still works.
Running electricity through a wet circuit causes short circuits. Powering off removes the risk.
Step 3 – Remove SIM, SD Card, and Case
- Eject the SIM tray — water trapped in the SIM slot is a common failure point.
- Remove any microSD card.
- Remove the phone case — it traps water against the phone body.
Step 4 – Do NOT Do These Things
❌ Do NOT put it in rice — rice debris can enter ports and it barely absorbs moisture.
❌ Do NOT use a hair dryer — heat damages the display and battery.
❌ Do NOT shake the phone — moves water into deeper components.
❌ Do NOT charge it — risk of short circuit.
Step 5 – Dry It Correctly
Best method: Silica gel packets
- Place phone in a sealed bag with silica gel desiccant packets (from shoe boxes or food packaging).
- Leave for 24–48 hours.
Alternative: Air drying
- Place on a dry cloth in a warm, ventilated area with ports facing down.
- Minimum 24 hours; ideally 48 hours before powering on.
For speakers: Use Xiaomi's built-in water eject tone (Settings → Sound → or a Speaker Cleaner app) after drying to vibrate remaining water from the grille.

Pro Tips
- After 48 hours of drying: power on and test screen, speakers, mic, cameras, and charging port. If anything fails, visit a Xiaomi authorized service center.
- Salt water and chlorinated pool water are far more damaging than fresh water — rinse gently with fresh water first if exposed to either.
