How to Use Smart Select to Crop, GIF, and Share Screenshots on Galaxy

Smart Select is one of Samsung Galaxy's most useful but underused Edge Panel features. It lets you crop any shape, create animated GIFs, and pin images directly on your screen.

How to Access Smart Select

Via Edge Panel:

1. Swipe inward from the right edge of the screen.
2. Navigate through panels to find Smart Select (swipe left/right through Edge Panel cards).
3. If not visible: Settings > Display > Edge panels > Panels > enable Smart Select.

Smart Select Features

1. Rectangle Capture

For precise rectangular crops of any on-screen content:

1. Open Smart Select > tap Rectangle (or Oval for oval shape).
2. Draw a box around the area you want to capture.
3. Tap Done or let go.
4. Options appear: Save, Share, Set as, or Translate (Bixby-powered OCR).

2. Oval / Free-Form Capture

• Oval: Captures a circular/oval area.
• Animation (GIF): See below.

3. GIF Creator

Create an animated GIF from any video or moving content on screen:

1. Open Smart Select > tap Animation.
2. Draw a box around the video/animation area you want to capture.
3. Tap the Record button.
4. Stop recording by tapping the Stop button.
5. The GIF is saved to Gallery automatically.

Use cases: Create GIFs from TikTok or YouTube, capture a looping animation, save a funny moment.

4. Pin to Screen

Keep a cropped screenshot floating on top of other apps:

1. Crop any content with Smart Select.
2. Tap Pin to screen option.
3. The captured image floats as a draggable overlay while you use other apps.

Use cases: Pin a recipe while cooking, keep reference notes visible, pin a map while navigating.

5. Text Extraction (Live OCR)

Smart Select detects and extracts text from screenshots:

1. Capture an area containing text.
2. Tap Extract text option.
3. The text is recognized and can be copied or shared.

Tips

• Smart Select works in any app — including games, web browsers, and documents.
• Use Translate on a Smart Select crop to instantly translate text from any image.
• GIFs created by Smart Select are limited to ~15 seconds maximum duration.
