How to Check Storage Before an iOS 27 Update
Do not rely on a universal GB figure for an iOS update. Storage use varies by iPhone, installed apps, downloaded content, and the update itself. The practical answer is to check the available space on the specific iPhone before downloading the update, then use the device's recommendations to make room if needed.
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see available storage, recommendations, and the apps using the most space. This view is more useful than a rule of thumb because it reflects the phone you are updating.
Make space without deleting the wrong data
- Review the storage recommendations at the top of the screen.
- Open large apps to see their app size and documents or data.
- Offload an unused app when you want to free the app itself while keeping its documents and data.
- Delete an app only after confirming that its related data is not needed or is backed up.
- Review large videos, downloads, and offline media separately.
Know what the storage categories mean
Apps, Photos, Media, Messages, and iCloud Drive can all account for local storage. System storage also varies by device and model. Cached and temporary files may not appear the same way in each storage view, so do not delete an app solely because you expect every cache category to shrink immediately.
After making room, return to Settings > General > Software Update and try the update again. If the update still cannot download or install, avoid guessing at a storage threshold; back up the iPhone and use the official update or recovery path appropriate to the error you see.
