How to Clean an iPhone Screen Properly & Safely?
iPhones have an oleophobic (oil-repellent) coating that resists fingerprints. Cleaning it incorrectly can strip this coating away.
What You Need
- Lint-free microfiber cloth (like a lens cloth).
- 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe (optional for disinfecting).
- Water (optional).
The Cleaning Process
- Unplug and Turn Off: Remove all cables and switch off the device.
- Wipe Gently: Use the dry microfiber cloth to wipe away dust and smudges.
- For Stubborn Marks: Lightly dampen the cloth with water. Never spray water directly onto the screen.
- Disinfecting: You can gently wipe the exterior surfaces with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipe. Do not use bleach.
What to Avoid
- Avoid Abrasives: Paper towels and napkins are too rough and can scratch the screen over time.
- No Household Cleaners: Avoid window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, or abrasives. These destroy the oil-repellent coating.
