How to Put iPhone in Recovery Mode?
Recovery Mode lets you restore or update your iPhone using a computer when it can't start normally.
Before You Begin:
- Connect your iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or PC (Apple Devices app or iTunes).
- Make sure your software is up to date.
Steps by iPhone Model:
iPhone 8 / SE (2nd gen) / X and later (including all iPhone 11–16 models):
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the "Connect to computer" screen appears.
- In Finder / iTunes / Apple Devices app, choose Update or Restore.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus:
- Press and hold both the Volume Down + Sleep/Wake buttons simultaneously.
- Keep holding until the "Connect to computer" screen appears.
iPhone 6s and earlier / SE (1st gen):
- Press and hold both the Home + Sleep/Wake buttons simultaneously.
- Keep holding until the "Connect to computer" screen appears.
🤔 Protip:
If the download takes more than 15 minutes, your device may exit Recovery Mode. Let the download finish, then repeat the button sequence.
