Why an iOS 27 Update May Require Wi-Fi (and What to Do)
If an iOS 27 download says that it requires Wi-Fi, use a reliable Wi-Fi network rather than repeatedly retrying on cellular. A setting that allows more cellular data does not guarantee that every software update can download over mobile data. Apple also provides a computer-based update path when a wireless update is not available.
Check the update requirements
- Back up the iPhone, connect it to power, and check that it has enough available storage.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update while connected to stable Wi-Fi.
- Pause other large downloads on the same network while the update downloads.
Use a computer when Wi-Fi is not available
Connect the iPhone to a Mac with Finder, or use Apple Devices or iTunes on a Windows PC or older Mac, and choose the update option. Updating is different from restoring: do not choose Restore unless you understand that it reinstalls the device and is a recovery action.
If the update still will not start
A VPN or proxy can prevent the iPhone from reaching update servers. If the same alert appears on more than one network, remove the downloaded update from Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then download it again. If it continues, use the computer path or contact Apple Support with the exact alert.
