How to Secure WhatsApp on Your Old Phone After Moving to iPhone 18

Once WhatsApp is working on your new iPhone, treat the old phone as a device-security task, not as a reason to delete your WhatsApp account. First make sure your recent chats, calls, and account access are available on the new phone. Then protect the old phone itself before giving it away, trading it in, or leaving it unattended.

Check the new phone first

  • Open WhatsApp on the new iPhone and confirm that you can send and receive a message.
  • Review the chats you need before changing anything on the old phone.
  • Make sure the new phone has a screen lock and that only you can receive account verification messages.

Secure the retired phone

Remove its access using the account and device controls currently shown in WhatsApp, if that option is available for your account. Also remove the old phone from any connected-device or browser sessions you no longer recognize. Do not rely on simply hiding the app icon as a security step.

Keep the old phone powered down and locked until you are certain the move is complete. If you plan to sell or recycle it, follow the phone maker's documented erase and account-removal process only after checking that anything important is already on the new device or in a backup.

Do not confuse these choices

Deleting WhatsApp, deleting chats, signing out of a linked device, and deleting an account are different actions. If your goal is only to stop using the old phone, avoid an account-deletion option unless you deliberately want to close the account everywhere.
