Why WhatsApp Chat Transfer Requires the Same Wi-Fi (and Other Requirements)

A chat transfer needs both phones to maintain the connection expected by the transfer flow. If the phones are on different networks, one device keeps switching connections, or a network blocks local device communication, the transfer may not continue. Use one stable, trusted Wi-Fi network before trying again.

Prepare both phones

  • Charge both devices and keep their screens available while the transfer is running.
  • Connect both phones to the same Wi-Fi network and turn off network features that make either phone switch connections unexpectedly.
  • Accept only the permissions that the transfer flow clearly requests, then reopen the flow from the beginning if it was interrupted.

Do not treat a hotspot as a guaranteed substitute

A personal hotspot can behave differently from a regular Wi-Fi network and may not be suitable for every transfer flow. If a hotspot attempt fails, use a normal private Wi-Fi network rather than repeatedly scanning or reconnecting.

Separate network issues from QR issues

If the QR code will not scan, solve that visible scan problem first. If it scans but the transfer later stops, focus on connection stability, power, and storage instead of repeatedly generating a new code.

If the in-app transfer continues to fail because the two phones cannot maintain the required connection, Dr.Fone - WhatsApp Transfer provides a separate computer-based WhatsApp transfer workflow. Use it as an alternative transfer path rather than assuming it changes WhatsApp account-verification requirements.
