How to Fix WhatsApp 'Unknown Error' During Move to iOS Import

An unknown error during a Move to iOS WhatsApp import does not identify one confirmed cause. Start by restarting both phones, then retry with both devices connected to power and the same Wi-Fi network or the iPhone hotspot. Keep Move to iOS open on Android and do not use another app or take a call during the transfer.

Check the supported migration setup

  • Before the transfer, update WhatsApp on the Android phone.
  • Use the same phone number on both devices.
  • Use Move to iOS while the iPhone is factory new or freshly reset.
  • Make sure the Android content fits in the iPhone's available storage.

On the Transfer Data screen, select WhatsApp, tap Start on Android, then return to Move to iOS and wait for completion. Install the latest WhatsApp version from the App Store on the iPhone only after Move to iOS confirms the transfer, then sign in with the same number and complete the import.

When the error returns

WhatsApp says an unknown-error message can indicate that the chat history may be corrupted; its supported choices are Retry or Skip Import. Do not complete setup expecting the old Android history to merge later. If WhatsApp was already activated on the new iPhone, back up anything you need from that iPhone before erasing it and restarting setup. A reset erases the whole iPhone.

For a separate computer-based WhatsApp workflow, Dr.Fone - WhatsApp Transfer provides a dedicated WhatsApp transfer workflow.
