How to Fix Samsung Galaxy Fingerprint Scanner Not Working
Fingerprint unlock failures on Samsung Galaxy are usually caused by dirty sensors, wet fingers, a screen protector, or software issues. Here's how to fix it.
Quick Fixes
- Clean the fingerprint sensor – For optical under-display sensors, wipe the screen over the fingerprint area with a clean cloth.
- Clean your finger – Dry, clean fingers register much more reliably. Moisturizer or sweat can cause failures.
- Check screen protector compatibility – Incompatible or non-original screen protectors can block under-display optical sensors. Only use Samsung-approved protectors.
Re-register Your Fingerprint
- Go to Settings → Security and Privacy → Biometrics → Fingerprints.
- Delete all existing fingerprints.
- Re-add your fingerprint(s) slowly, pressing at different angles — register the same finger 2–3 times from different angles for best recognition.
Software Fixes
- Update One UI – Fingerprint-related bugs are patched in system updates. Go to Settings → Software Update.
- Restart your phone – Clears biometric service glitches.
- Clear Biometrics Data – Go to Settings → Security and Privacy → Biometrics → Biometric Preferences → Reset Biometrics.
For Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensors (Galaxy S-series)
Ultrasonic sensors work through up to 800-micron materials. If you're using a case that covers the sensor area, it may interfere.
When to Seek Repair
If the sensor physically fails to scan (no animation, no vibration response), the sensor may need replacement at a Samsung Service Center.
Dr.Fone Tip: Use Dr.Fone – System Repair to fix software-related Samsung Galaxy fingerprint issues without resetting your device.
