How to Use iPhone DFU Mode?

DFU (Device Firmware Update) Mode is a deeper restore state than Recovery Mode. It bypasses the bootloader and lets iTunes directly flash firmware — useful for severe software issues or downgrading iOS.

Recovery Mode vs. DFU Mode:

Recovery Mode DFU Mode
Screen Shows iTunes/computer icon Completely black
Bootloader Loads iBoot Bypasses iBoot
Use case Standard restore/update Deep firmware restore, downgrade
Ease Easier More difficult
Data loss Yes Yes
How to Enter DFU Mode:
iPhone 8 / SE (2nd gen) / X and later:
  1. Connect to the computer (Finder / iTunes open).
  2. Quickly press and release Volume Up.
  3. Quickly press and release Volume Down.
  4. Press and hold the Side button until the screen goes black (~3 sec).
  5. While still holding Side, also hold Volume Down for 5 seconds.
  6. Release the Side button, but keep holding Volume Down for another 10 seconds.
  7. If the screen stays black and iTunes/Finder detects your device → DFU Mode active.
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus:
  1. Connect to the computer.
  2. Hold Side (Power) + Volume Down for 8 seconds.
  3. Release the Side button; keep holding Volume Down for 10 more seconds.
iPhone 6s and earlier:
  1. Connect to the computer.
  2. Hold Side (Power) + Home for 8 seconds.
  3. Release Side; keep holding Home for 10 seconds.
How to Exit DFU Mode (No Restore Needed):
  • iPhone 8 and later: Quick-press Volume Up → Quick-press Volume Down → Hold Side until Apple logo.
  • iPhone 7: Hold Volume Down + Side until Apple logo.
  • iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Side + Home until Apple logo.
Warning:

DFU restore will erase all data. Back up your iPhone first with Wondershare Dr.Fone.

🤔 Protip:

If you're stuck in DFU mode or want to avoid data loss, use Dr.Fone - System Repair (iOS) Standard Mode to repair iOS issues without DFU mode.
