How to Prioritize or Limit Hotspot Speed for Connected Devices on Xiaomi
HyperOS and MIUI have built-in hotspot management tools to control who connects, monitor data usage, and block specific devices.
Opening Hotspot Settings
- Settings → Connection & sharing → Mobile hotspot.
- Enable Mobile hotspot if not already on.
- Tap Connected users or Manage hotspot to see connected devices.
Blocking Specific Devices
To block an unauthorized or unwanted connected device:
1. Settings → Mobile hotspot → Connected users.
2. Tap the device you want to block → Block or Deny.
3. The device is disconnected and cannot rejoin with the same MAC address.
Setting a Connected Device Limit
Prevent too many devices from connecting (conserves battery and speed):
1. Settings → Mobile hotspot → Set up hotspot.
2. Tap Maximum connections → select 1–10 devices.
Monitoring Data Usage
- Settings → Mobile hotspot → tap your hotspot name.
- Data usage shows real-time consumption by session.
- For overall mobile data limits: Settings → SIM cards → Data usage → Set data limit.
Native Speed Limiting (Per-Device)
Note: HyperOS does not currently offer per-device speed limits natively. All connected devices share the total available bandwidth.
Workarounds:
- Use NetGuard or GlassWire app to monitor and restrict per-app data.
- Set a total data cap to prevent excessive usage by all connected devices.
Hotspot Band Selection (2.4GHz vs 5GHz)
Faster connected devices benefit from 5GHz hotspot:
1. Settings → Mobile hotspot → Set up hotspot → AP Band.
2. Select 5 GHz for faster speeds (shorter range) or 2.4 GHz for wider compatibility.
Pro Tips
- Rename your hotspot to something non-identifiable — default names often broadcast your phone model (e.g., "Xiaomi 15 Pro").
- Enable hotspot timeout to auto-disable after no devices are connected for X minutes: Mobile hotspot → Timeout → 5/10 minutes.
- USB tethering is faster and more battery-efficient than Wi-Fi hotspot for a single connected laptop.
