How to Use Xiaomi Phone as a Wi-Fi Analyzer to Find the Best Channel
Is your home Wi-Fi slow even when you're close to the router? The problem might be channel congestion — too many nearby networks using the same Wi-Fi channel. Your Xiaomi phone can diagnose and fix this.
What Is Wi-Fi Channel Congestion?
Wi-Fi routers broadcast on specific channels within the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. When multiple routers in your area use the same channel, they interfere with each other and reduce speed.
- 2.4 GHz: 14 channels (1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping — use only these)
- 5 GHz: 25+ non-overlapping channels — less congestion, higher speed
Using the Xiaomi Built-in Wi-Fi Test
1. Go to Settings → Wi-Fi → [Connected network name].
2. Tap the info icon (ⓘ) or ""Manage"" button.
3. Scroll to see Channel, Frequency, and Signal strength details.
This shows your current channel but doesn't show neighbouring networks.
Method 1: Mi Wi-Fi Analyser (Built-in)
Some Xiaomi phones include a hidden Wi-Fi analyser in the Security app:
1. Open Security → Network check or Wi-Fi assistant.
2. Tap Wi-Fi signal test to see signal quality graphs.
Method 2: Free Wi-Fi Analyser App
For full channel analysis, install WiFi Analyzer (open-source) from F-Droid or WiFi Analyzer from Play Store:
1. Open the app — it scans all nearby Wi-Fi networks.
2. View the Channel Graph tab — see which channels are congested.
3. Identify the channel with the fewest/weakest networks overlapping.
4. Log into your router admin panel and manually set the channel.
How to Change Your Router's Wi-Fi Channel
1. Open a browser and enter your router's IP (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
2. Log in (credentials usually on the router label).
3. Go to Wireless settings → Channel → Manual.
4. Select the least congested channel from your analysis.
5. Save and reconnect.
Recommended Channels
| Band | Best Channels |
|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | 1, 6, or 11 (only non-overlapping) |
| 5 GHz | Any channel not used by neighbours |
Quick tip: Xiaomi routers (Mi Router 4A, AX3000, BE7000) also have a built-in channel optimiser in the Mi Router app — enable Auto Channel for automatic optimisation.
