How to Use Xiaomi Phone as a Wi-Fi Repeater or Range Extender

If your Wi-Fi signal doesn't reach every corner of your home, your Xiaomi phone can act as a Wi-Fi bridge or repeater — receiving the signal and sharing it to other devices via hotspot.

Understanding the Method

Xiaomi Android doesn't have a built-in ""repeater mode"" like some routers, but you can achieve the same result by:
1. Connecting your phone to the source Wi-Fi.
2. Enabling Mobile Hotspot — your phone shares that internet connection to other devices.

This is called Wi-Fi to Hotspot bridging and it works on all Xiaomi phones with HyperOS.
How to Set It Up

1. Connect your Xiaomi phone to the Wi-Fi network you want to extend.
2. Go to Settings → Connection & sharing → Mobile Hotspot.
3. Toggle Mobile Hotspot on.
4. Set an SSID (network name) and password for the new hotspot network.
5. Other devices (laptops, tablets, smart TVs) connect to this new hotspot.

Optimising the Setup
  • Placement: Position your Xiaomi phone midway between your router and the dead zone — ideally elevated.
  • 5GHz vs 2.4GHz: Connect your phone to 5GHz (faster) and broadcast the hotspot on 2.4GHz for wider device compatibility.
  • Hotspot Frequency: On HyperOS, go to Mobile Hotspot → AP band and select 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz based on your needs.
  • Device Limit: By default, Xiaomi allows up to 10 devices. Reduce to 3–5 for better per-device speeds.
Battery and Data Considerations
Factor Impact
Screen on while hotspot active High battery drain
Charging during use Recommended for long sessions
Data source is Wi-Fi No mobile data consumed
Connected device count More devices = lower speed per device
Limitations
  • Latency increases slightly compared to direct router connection.
  • Throughput is halved because the phone handles both receiving and broadcasting.

For a permanent fix, consider a dedicated Xiaomi Mi Router or a Wi-Fi range extender. But for occasional use, this method works perfectly without any extra hardware.
