How to Use Xiaomi's Second Space as a Work/Personal Profile Separator
Second Space creates a completely isolated second Android environment on your single Xiaomi phone — perfect for separating work and personal life.
What Is Second Space?
- A separate user profile with its own apps, accounts, wallpaper, and settings.
- Not visible from the main space — switching requires authentication.
- Use case: separate work apps / work email / work contacts from personal life, all on one device.
- Different from Dual Apps — Second Space is a full separate environment, not just one cloned app.
Enable Second Space
- Settings → Special features → Second Space → toggle on.
- Set up a separate PIN, password, or fingerprint for Second Space.
- Choose whether Second Space should appear as a separate lock screen or require a special gesture from the main space.
- Tap Enter Second Space — you'll set it up like a fresh phone.
Set Up Second Space for Work
In Second Space (after entering):
1. Add your work Google account.
2. Install work apps: Outlook, Teams, Slack, corporate VPN, work browser.
3. Configure work notifications — keep on always.
4. Set up work Wi-Fi / VPN if needed.
Switching Between Spaces
Method 1 – From lock screen:
- Enter Main Space PIN to go to personal.
- Enter Second Space PIN directly at the lock screen.
Method 2 – From within a Space:
- Settings → Second Space → Switch to Second Space (or reverse).
- Or add a shortcut on home screen for quick switching.
Method 3 – Quick switch via notification panel (if enabled):
- Swipe down → tap the Switch space quick tile.
What Is Shared vs. Isolated?
| Element | Shared | Isolated |
|---|---|---|
| Phone calls / SMS | ✅ Same SIM used | Separate notification handling |
| Apps | Separate installations | Completely separate |
| Photos / Gallery | Separate | Completely separate |
| Accounts (Google, Mi) | Separate per space | Completely separate |
| Storage | Shared physical storage | Separate logical sections |
| Settings | Mostly separate | Separate |
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- True isolation — work apps can't access personal data.
- Separate notification management per space.
- One device handles both, reducing carrying two phones.
- IT departments cannot access Main Space if Second Space is work-managed.
Cons:
- Switching requires intentional action — can be inconvenient.
- Some work MDM (Mobile Device Management) solutions may require a fully separate device.
- Storage is shared — large work downloads affect personal storage.
Pro Tips
- Set Second Space as the default space on your work network (via Auto-switch rules) to make transitions seamless.
- Xiaomi's Second Space is free — unlike Samsung's DeX or some enterprise work profile solutions.
