How to Encrypt iPhone Backup?
Know the Two Backup Types
- iCloud backups are encrypted automatically.
- Computer backups (Finder on Mac or iTunes on Windows/older macOS) are encrypted only if you enable it.
Encrypt a Computer Backup (Finder or iTunes)
- Connect iPhone to your computer using a cable.
- Open Finder (macOS Catalina+) or iTunes.
- Select your iPhone.
- In Backups, choose This Computer.
- Enable Encrypt local backup (or Encrypt iPhone backup).
- Create and store the encryption password safely (you may not be able to restore without it).
- Click Back Up Now.
What Encryption Adds
Encrypted backups can include saved passwords, Wi‑Fi settings, website history, and Health data (coverage varies by iOS version).
🤔 Protip:
Warning: If you forget the backup encryption password, Apple can’t recover it for you. Consider using a password manager.
Optional: Dr.Fone Recommendation
For an alternative backup workflow, Wondershare Dr.Fone can help you create selective backups and restore specific data types without overwriting everything.
