How to Stop iPhone Apps from Tracking?
What “Tracking” Means on iPhone
App Tracking Transparency (ATT) controls whether apps can track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising.
Turn Off Tracking Requests (Recommended)
- Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
- Review the app list below and disable any that are on.
Extra Privacy Controls Worth Enabling
- Limit ad personalization: Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising > turn off Personalized Ads (if shown).
- Safari privacy: Settings > Safari > Prevent Cross-Site Tracking (On).
- Use iCloud Private Relay (if you have iCloud+): Settings > your name > iCloud > Private Relay.
ATT Options Comparison
| Setting | Effect | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Allow Apps to Request to Track = Off | Stops most tracking prompts and disables many trackers by default | Some apps may show less relevant ads |
| Per-app tracking = Off | Blocks specific apps from tracking | May need manual review per app |
🤔 Protip:
Reality Check: ATT reduces cross-app tracking, but it doesn’t stop all data collection. Also review permissions (Location/Contacts) and privacy reports inside apps.
