How to Fix Failed or Stuck Software Update on Samsung Galaxy [2026]
A Samsung Galaxy update getting stuck or failing is frustrating but usually fixable. Here are the most common causes and fixes.
Why Updates Fail
- Insufficient storage space (less than 2GB free)
- Unstable Wi-Fi connection during download
- Low battery during installation
- Corrupt downloaded update file
Fix 1: Free Up Storage
Go to Settings → Battery and Device Care → Storage → Clean Now. Samsung recommends at least 2–4GB free before updating.
Fix 2: Try Again on Stable Wi-Fi
Cancel the current download and retry on a reliable Wi-Fi connection. Mobile data updates are error-prone for large files.
Fix 3: Restart and Retry
If the phone is stuck at a percentage: hold Volume Down + Side button for 10 seconds to force restart, then go back to Settings → Software Update → Download and Install and try again.
Fix 4: Delete Cached Update
Go to Settings → Apps → Show System Apps → Software Update → Clear Cache and Data → retry the update.
Fix 5: Use Smart Switch on PC
If OTA (over-the-air) keeps failing:
- Download Samsung Smart Switch on your PC.
- Connect Galaxy via USB.
- Let Smart Switch handle the update — this method bypasses OTA issues.
Fix 6: Recovery Mode Update
If the phone is stuck in a boot loop after a failed update:
- Boot into Recovery Mode (Power off → Volume Up + Side button).
- Select Apply Update from SD card (if you have the firmware on SD).
- Or select Wipe Cache Partition and reboot to see if it recovers.
Dr.Fone Tip: If your Galaxy is stuck in a boot loop after a failed update, Dr.Fone – System Repair can fix the firmware issue without data loss.
