How to Fix SD Card Not Recognized on Samsung Galaxy

If your Samsung Galaxy doesn't recognize your microSD card, the fix is usually quick. Here's how to diagnose and resolve the issue.

Step 1: Check Physical Insertion
  1. Power off your Galaxy.
  2. Use the SIM eject tool to remove the SIM/SD tray.
  3. Remove and re-insert the SD card carefully — ensure it clicks into position.
  4. Reinsert the tray firmly and power on.
Step 2: Try the SD Card in Another Device

Test the SD card in another phone, camera, or PC card reader. If it's not recognized anywhere, the card itself is faulty.

Step 3: Restart Your Galaxy

A simple restart often resolves temporary recognition failures.

Step 4: Format the SD Card on Galaxy

If the card is recognized but shows errors:

  1. Go to Settings → Battery and Device Care → Storage → SD Card.
  2. Tap Format → confirm.

⚠️ Warning: formatting erases all data on the card.

Step 5: Check File System Compatibility

Samsung Galaxy supports FAT32 and exFAT. NTFS is not supported. If your card was formatted as NTFS on a PC, reformat it to exFAT.

Step 6: Check SD Card Capacity

Most Galaxy phones support up to 1TB microSD cards. Using a card with a higher capacity than supported (rare but possible on very old models) can cause detection failures.

When to Replace the SD Card

SD cards have a limited read/write lifespan. If the card works in other devices but fails consistently in your Galaxy, the SIM/SD tray contacts may be dirty or bent — inspect with a light.
